A play on another euphemism of being a redheaded step child.
They told her the snakes were a punishment.
That they came because she was dangerous, because she deserved it.
But the truth was quieter.
They curled into her hair not to curse her, but to remember for her every betrayal, every moment she was not believed, every time her gaze was turned into something to be feared.
She does not glare. She does not threaten.
She simply watches.
Those who meet her eyes feel the weight of their own intentions harden inside them. The cruel become brittle. The dishonest grow heavy. Only those who look without hunger, without conquest, can remain soft and moving.
She never asked to be a monster.
She became a mirror.
And mirrors, after all, are only blamed for what they reveal.
